Audio-Visual Materials

The Library has a collection of circulating, physical CDs, DVDs, and Blu-Ray discs housed behind the Service & Information Desk. University Library is not currently adding to its physical collection of audio-visual materials except for items purchased for the library’s Pop Shop.

Most audio-visual acquisitions are in the form of streaming media and done on an on-demand basis through the Faculty Films on Demand initiative. The Library rarely collects general music recordings and instead focuses primarily on films that support the curriculum. The Library does not collect audio books unless required for accessibility needs.

The Library does not collect older audio-visual formats such as VHS and cassettes nor does it collect microforms unless the material is of extreme significance and is unavailable in any other format. Exceptions to this policy are extremely rare but can be submitted via the Purchase Request Form.

Instructors of Record may request that the Library purchase streaming video access for videos that are required for use by the entire class. Requests should be made via the Purchase Request Form. Subject librarians may complete the form for faculty members but should include the faculty member’s name in the request.

Faculty and campus groups occasionally request that we purchase Public Performance Rights (PPR) for showing films at events. The Library will purchase PPR through our vendors but will ask that the group pay for the rights. Further, the Library will only do this when the events are free, and the expected audience is mostly IU Indianapolis affiliates.

The Library does not purchase streaming videos requested by students or staff, except in the case that the request is for a faculty member, in which case they should complete the form for the faculty member but should include the faculty member’s name in the request. No other exceptions.
